Merck & Co. has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a first in class oral cholesterol lowering medicine, marking a significant advance in the treatment of patients with elevated cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease.

The FDA approved the once daily pill for adults with certain forms of high cholesterol who require additional lowering of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol, alongside diet and other lipid lowering therapies. The approval offers patients an oral alternative to injectable treatments currently used to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Merck said the drug works through a novel mechanism that differs from existing cholesterol-lowering medicines, making it the first treatment in its class to receive regulatory approval in the United States. Clinical trial results showed the therapy significantly reduced LDL cholesterol levels when used in combination with standard treatments, including statins.

Company executives said the approval expands treatment options for patients who are unable to achieve recommended cholesterol targets with currently available therapies or who cannot tolerate high doses of statins. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, with high cholesterol recognised as one of its major risk factors.

The FDA’s decision was based on data from late-stage clinical trials evaluating the drug’s safety and effectiveness. Merck said it plans to make the medicine available in the United States in the coming months and will continue additional studies to assess its long term impact on reducing heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events.

Industry analysts said the approval strengthens Merck’s cardiovascular portfolio and could increase competition in the rapidly growing cholesterol treatment market, where demand continues to rise as healthcare providers seek more convenient therapies for patients at risk of heart disease.
