Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football after 23 years representing Portugal, bringing an extraordinary chapter of his career to an emotional close.
The 41-year-old forward announced his decision on Instagram on Thursday, describing his departure as a difficult choice driven by both his heart and his responsibility to the national team.
“The day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said.
He added that wearing the iconic shirt for 23 years had been a privilege, insisting that it was time to pass the responsibility to the next generation.
“A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end,” he said, reflecting on the supporters, memories and experiences that defined his international career.
Ronaldo acknowledged the disappointments and mistakes along the way but stressed that his commitment to Portugal never wavered.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner retires as the highest-scoring player in men’s international football, with 146 goals in 234 appearances, according to UEFA figures updated in October 2026.
He also holds the record for the most international appearances by a male footballer and became the first player to score at six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Ronaldo captained Portugal to Euro 2016, their first major international trophy, and helped them win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His departure marks the end of one of the most remarkable international careers in football history.
