Qualcomm has signed a multi-year agreement with SpaceX to supply radio equipment, baseband units and software for Starlink Mobile’s planned nationwide terrestrial 5G network in the United States.
Announced on Wednesday, November 4, the deal will see Qualcomm’s technology deployed across tens of thousands of mobile network sites beginning in 2027. Although financial details were not disclosed, Qualcomm described the agreement as its biggest 5G infrastructure deal to date.
The partnership marks a major expansion of Qualcomm’s telecommunications business beyond smartphone processors and chips. The company will provide technology designed to improve network coverage, capacity and spectrum efficiency.
For SpaceX, the agreement supports its ambition to establish a nationwide wireless carrier capable of competing with major US operators, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
The planned network will combine terrestrial 5G infrastructure with Starlink’s satellite connectivity. Its initial deployment will focus on ground-based 5G services, with an architecture designed to accommodate future connectivity and network developments.
Qualcomm’s advanced radio and beamforming technologies are expected to help SpaceX direct wireless signals more efficiently and maximise the use of its licensed spectrum.
The agreement comes as SpaceX continues to pursue spectrum acquisitions and infrastructure partnerships to strengthen its position in the US telecommunications market.
The development highlights growing competition in the wireless industry and the increasing role of satellite technology in shaping the future of mobile connectivity.
