The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated a 63-member campaign organization in Cross River State as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections. The inauguration took place on Wednesday in Calabar, where the National Coordinator of the Atiku/Amaechi Campaign Organization, Ekpo Okon, said Nigeria needed committed leaders to address its worsening economic challenges.
Okon described the event as the beginning of the party’s efforts to mobilize voters and promote its candidates ahead of the elections scheduled for January and February 2027. He criticized the Federal Government’s removal of the fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira, arguing that the policies had increased the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians.
A former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state also questioned how funds saved from subsidy removal and increased government borrowing had been utilized. He alleged that the current administration had failed to translate these resources into meaningful development. Okon further criticized the rising cost of university education, saying student loan programmes had added to the financial pressure on low-income families.
He advocated supplying crude oil to local refineries at reduced rates to support domestic petroleum production and make fuel more affordable. The ADC chieftain urged party members to strengthen grassroots mobilization and educate voters on the effects of government policies ahead of the elections. The party’s governorship candidate, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, said her proposed administration would work towards transforming Cross River from a state focused on survival into a thriving society that prioritizes the welfare of its people.
She explained that the party had developed a manifesto centred on citizens’ welfare, economic growth, productivity and strong institutions. Toyo also criticized the use of religion in Nigerian politics, stating that the ADC would prioritize the rule of law, accountability, security and citizens’ empowerment. She accused the All Progressives Congress of failing to deliver meaningful results after 12 years in power and relying on personal attacks against opposition figures.
Earlier, the ADC Cross River State Chairman, Godwin Effanga, described Toyo as an experienced and capable candidate who could address the state’s development challenges. Effanga called on residents to support the party beyond political affiliations, urging members to intensify voter mobilization and protect their votes during the 2027 elections.
The ADC has inaugurated a 63-member campaign team in Cross River State to begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The party also used the event to criticise the Federal Government’s economic policies and present its governorship candidate’s plans for the state.
