More than 30 bodies believed to be those of suspected bandits have been discovered in farmlands around Bukuyum town in Zamfara State following a gun battle with security operatives.
The Zamfara State Police Command said the confrontation occurred on October 28, when armed bandits attempted to attack Bukuyum, in Bukuyum Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said security personnel, working alongside local civil security groups, engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire and prevented them from advancing into the town.
He said the bodies were reportedly discovered in surrounding farmlands after the confrontation. However, the command cautioned that the actual number of casualties remained subject to further verification, noting that armed groups often evacuate their dead and injured from battle locations.
The police also said preliminary security assessments indicated that sustained operational pressure had forced some armed groups to leave the state, although details of their movements were not provided.
Security operations are continuing in Bukuyum in collaboration with other security agencies and local security groups.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing communities in Zamfara and the wider North-West, where armed groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings and raids. Sustained security operations and reliable information from residents remain important to protecting communities and restoring public confidence.
