AI Investment Concerns Raise Questions Over US Dollar Stability

Growing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) valuations are raising questions about the US dollar’s traditional role as a safe-haven currency. Foreign investors have continued to invest heavily in American technology stocks, corporate bonds and AI infrastructure, increasing the dollar’s exposure to changes in market sentiment.

However, a decline in confidence in the AI sector could prompt investors to withdraw funds from US markets, potentially putting pressure on the dollar.

The concern centres on “hot money” — investment capital that moves quickly between markets in search of higher returns. If expectations for AI growth weaken, investors could reconsider their exposure to US assets, affecting demand for the dollar.

Recent market volatility has highlighted this risk, with investors turning to traditional safe-haven currencies such as the Japanese yen and Swiss franc during periods of pressure on AI valuations.

A prolonged slowdown in AI investment could also affect US economic growth, reduce demand for American stocks and bonds, and increase the likelihood of interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Lower interest rates could make dollar-denominated assets less attractive to international investors.

Nevertheless, a weaker dollar is not guaranteed. During periods of severe financial uncertainty, investors may still seek dollars to meet financial obligations and secure liquidity, potentially strengthening the currency in the short term.

The key question is whether the AI investment boom will deliver the returns investors expect. If confidence declines and foreign capital begins to leave US markets, the dollar could face increased pressure as the global financial outlook moves towards 2027.
