Several Nigerian athletes have achieved significant career milestones in 2026, recording landmark goals, club appearances, international caps and cricket performances across different competitions.
Among them is striker Tolu Arokodare, who scored his 100th career goal during Ajax’s 2–0 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Conference League on October 22. The Nigerian forward came off the bench to break the deadlock before helping set up the second goal in stoppage time.
Ademola Lookman also reached 100 career goals on his Atlético Madrid debut in February, scoring during the Spanish club’s 5–0 victory over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
Taiwo Awoniyi marked his 100th appearance for Nottingham Forest with two goals in the club’s 3–1 victory over Chelsea in May, helping his side secure an important win away from home.
In international football, Alex Iwobi reached 100 appearances for Nigeria in June, joining an exclusive group of Super Eagles players to achieve the milestone. Moses Simon followed in September, recording his 100th appearance during Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Madagascar.
Defender Calvin Bassey also reached 100 Premier League appearances, while Nathan Tella made his 100th appearance for Bayer Leverkusen in April.
In domestic football, Rangers International striker Godwin Obaje scored his 100th Nigeria Premier Football League goal in September, joining Victor Ezeji and Rabiu Ali in the league’s 100-goal club.
Nigerian cricket also recorded a notable achievement through Kenneth Boniface, who scored 100 runs off 74 balls against Sierra Leone at the ICC Under-19 World Cup qualifying tournament in Rwanda. He finished the competition with 251 runs in five innings and was named its Most Valuable Player.
These achievements demonstrate the breadth of Nigerian sporting talent, spanning European football, domestic competitions, international representation and cricket.
Beyond the individual records, the milestones offer an opportunity to recognise the importance of sustained development, professional discipline and competitive exposure. Celebrating achievements across different sports can also help draw attention to emerging talent and encourage greater investment in coaching, facilities and opportunities for young Nigerian athletes.
