Advances in artificial intelligence are accelerating the discovery of software vulnerabilities, raising concerns about further cyber disruptions as technology companies and government agencies struggle to secure systems against potential attacks.
Cybersecurity experts warned on Friday, October 23, that the growing number of flaws uncovered with AI could trigger additional outages similar to those that disrupted government websites and online services across several countries earlier in the week.
Research from cybersecurity intelligence firm VulnCheck indicates that the number of discovered digital vulnerabilities doubled year-on-year, with AI contributing to the increase. The development is creating additional pressure on security teams responsible for identifying weaknesses and deploying protective updates.
Matthew Prince, chief executive of internet infrastructure company Cloudflare, warned that numerous serious vulnerabilities remained hidden in critical software systems, predicting repeated security emergencies as AI tools expose previously undetected weaknesses.
The recent disruptions followed the discovery of vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language that supports a substantial portion of the internet. Some website operators temporarily took their services offline while developers worked to address the security risks.
AI is also shortening the time required to turn discovered vulnerabilities into working exploits. Security specialists said tasks that previously took weeks or months could increasingly be completed within hours, reducing the time available for organisations to protect their systems.
However, experts cautioned that finding more vulnerabilities does not automatically translate into more successful cyberattacks. Some flaws remain difficult to exploit, while their discovery also allows developers to strengthen software security.
The growing challenge highlights the need for organisations to apply security updates promptly, monitor exposed systems and strengthen their incident-response capabilities as AI reshapes the cybersecurity landscape.
