Dutch defender Perr Schuurs has praised Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare’s physical strength and aerial ability, admitting he has rarely faced a forward with similar qualities during his career in the Netherlands and Italy.
Schuurs made the remarks after struggling to contain the Nigerian during Ajax’s 1-1 draw with NEC Nijmegen, in which Arokodare scored an impressive header to help his side secure a point.
“I played in the Eredivisie for four years and I had never come up against a striker like that. And in Italy, you do not often see this type either,” Schuurs told De Telegraaf, as reported by Livescore.
The former Torino defender also dismissed comparisons between Arokodare and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, whom he encountered during his time in Serie A.
“People mention Lukaku, but he is still a different type of player. Tolu wants the ball on his chest or in the air more often,” he said.
Schuurs admitted that Arokodare performed beyond his expectations once the match got underway.
“I had already expected a lot. But when the match started, it was actually even more than I had thought beforehand,” he added.
Arokodare’s ability to hold off defenders, win aerial duels and bring teammates into play offers Ajax a distinctive attacking option. His headed goal against NEC further demonstrated the threat he poses when crosses enter the penalty area.
The 25-year-old joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in July, with the Dutch club reportedly holding an option to make the move permanent.
His performances in Amsterdam have continued to attract attention, with his physical presence and aerial threat setting him apart as he seeks to establish himself at the club.
