BlackRock Turns Cautious on US Stocks as AI Uncertainty Drives Shift Towards Short-Term Treasuries

BlackRock has reduced its bullish stance on US stocks and increased its preference for short-term US government bonds, citing uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) investment and growing volatility in financial markets.

The BlackRock Investment Institute, the research arm of the world’s largest asset manager, downgraded its view on US equities from overweight to neutral in a report dated October 12. The decision reflects concerns about potential market swings as investors reassess the costs and expected returns of the AI boom.

The institute also upgraded its outlook for short-dated US Treasury securities, arguing that market expectations for further interest rate increases may be excessive. It had maintained an underweight position on US Treasuries for most of the previous six years.

However, BlackRock adopted a neutral position on longer-dated Treasury securities, reflecting a more cautious approach to government debt across different maturities.

The shift comes as investors question whether the enormous sums being spent on AI infrastructure will generate sufficient returns. Recent volatility in technology shares has heightened concerns about concentrated investment in a relatively small group of companies driving much of the US stock market’s performance.

Short-term Treasuries may offer investors greater flexibility because their prices are generally less sensitive to interest rate changes than those of longer-term bonds.

BlackRock’s revised position highlights a broader reassessment of investment risks as markets balance the potential of AI against valuation concerns, interest rate uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

The change does not amount to a complete retreat from US equities, but signals a more measured approach to the technology-driven rally.
