Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, neutralising more than 25 terrorists.

The attack targeted troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion on the night of October 6 and continued into the early hours of October 7. The insurgents reportedly advanced from four directions but encountered resistance from soldiers supported by the Nigerian Air Force.

According to the military, the counter-offensive inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers and forced surviving fighters to retreat.

A preliminary assessment indicated that more than 25 terrorists were killed, while troops recovered 14 bodies from the battlefield. The operation also yielded six AK-47 rifles and other weapons and ammunition.

However, the military confirmed that some soldiers were killed during the confrontation and expressed condolences to their families.

Troops have continued operations in the area to recover additional weapons, track fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping.

The operation forms part of ongoing military efforts to disrupt terrorist activities and protect communities across the North-East.

Security operations remain critical in Borno State, where insurgent groups continue to pose threats to military formations and civilian populations.
