Nigeria Considers FIFA Compensation Over DR Congo Eligibility Row

Nigeria is considering all available options, including seeking compensation from FIFA, following fresh revelations that the governing body’s legal officials had identified an eligibility issue involving DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The National Sports Commission says the development vindicates Nigeria’s earlier complaint over the eligibility of DR Congo players.

Reports by The New York Times and Le Monde claim FIFA lawyers found that Mpasi had not completed the required process to switch his international allegiance from France, where he previously represented the youth teams.

Despite the finding, FIFA reportedly took no disciplinary action against DR Congo, who later defeated Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off to secure a World Cup place.

An NSC official told ESPN that Nigeria could seek compensation for financial and sporting losses linked to missing the tournament.

“Nothing has been decided yet, but we will seriously consider seeking compensation from FIFA for all of the economic losses this has cost Nigeria,” the official said.

Nigeria had complained to FIFA after DR Congo eliminated the Super Eagles 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in the African play-off final.

According to documents reviewed by The New York Times, FIFA officials considered options including awarding Nigeria the victory, imposing financial sanctions or replacing DR Congo in the play-off against Jamaica. The case was eventually dismissed on a technicality.

The NSC is now pushing for FIFA to reopen the matter, insisting the new evidence warrants a fresh review.

“Nigeria has been vindicated,” the official said, arguing that the alleged eligibility breach should be addressed regardless of when the complaint was filed.
