Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies collected N603.64 billion from customers in the second quarter of 2026 despite recording a decline in the volume of electricity received from the power market.
The figure was contained in the second quarter report of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, which showed that average electricity offtake by the 11 DisCos fell to 3,197.03 megawatt-hours per hour, representing a 3.40 per cent decline from the 3,309.48MWh/h recorded in the first quarter.
The report stated that the DisCos received 6,982.32 gigawatt-hours of electricity during the quarter but billed customers for only 5,812.31GWh.
The value of electricity received stood at N946.57 billion, while electricity worth N744.67 billion was billed to customers. The DisCos subsequently collected N603.64 billion, representing an 81.06 per cent collection efficiency.
NERC said the difference between the amount billed and the amount collected was N141.03 billion.
The commission also reported that the combined Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection losses of the DisCos stood at 36.23 per cent during the quarter, resulting in an estimated N129.07 billion revenue loss.
Despite the challenges, the loss level improved slightly from 37.44 per cent recorded in the first quarter.
The Federal Government also covered about N321.26 billion of generation costs through electricity subsidies during the quarter.
