At least 15 farmers and firewood gatherers have been killed in a suspected terrorist attack in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, with three other people still missing.
The victims were reportedly attacked while carrying out their activities around Ala and Musune wards in the local government area.
According to reports, the group had 18 people when they went into the area on Wednesday evening. Following the attack, the bodies of 15 victims were recovered and subsequently buried, while efforts were ongoing to locate the three others whose whereabouts remain unknown.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying security authorities were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine the whereabouts of the missing persons.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of farmers and other residents who depend on rural areas for their livelihoods, particularly in communities affected by persistent insecurity.
The attack adds to the security challenges confronting Borno State, where farmers and rural residents have repeatedly faced threats from insurgents and other armed groups.
Security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks as investigations into the incident continue.
