Tensions have risen in the Falkland Islands following reports of Argentine visitors displaying national flags and political banners supporting Argentina’s claim to the territory.
Some island residents have called for Argentine visitors to be barred from entering the islands, saying the displays are politically provocative and cause distress because of the history of the 1982 Falklands War.
Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly member Michael Goss said residents had been vocal about preventing Argentine visitors from entering, while acknowledging that any such restriction would have to comply with existing laws.
He said the Assembly was examining possible measures to prevent visitors from using trips to the islands to promote political agendas.
Official Falkland Islands guidance already asks visitors not to publicly wave or display Argentine flags or wear Argentine military uniforms, warning that such actions can cause concern and distress among residents.
The latest dispute comes amid renewed tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom over sovereignty of the islands. Argentina continues to claim the territory, while the UK maintains that the Falkland Islanders have the right to self determination.
The issue has also drawn attention following an Argentine football team banner supporting Argentina’s claim during the 2026 World Cup semi final against England.
