Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has granted pardon to nine inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities, as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
As reported by Adamawa News Agency the gesture also includes the commutation of the death sentence handed down to Saidu Abdullahi, an inmate of the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment.
The beneficiaries of the pardon are Abubakar Dajo of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso of the Numan Custodial Centre; Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who are serving at different custodial centres across Adamawa.
The decision followed the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and was approved in accordance with Section 212(1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
The approval takes immediate effect, subject to the completion of the necessary legal procedures in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The gesture is expected to enable the beneficiaries to reunite with their families and embrace a fresh start as the nation celebrates another year of independence.
