Trump’s Conspiracy Claims Draw Warnings Over Impact on US Freedoms and Institutions

US President Donald Trump’s repeated use of conspiracy claims against political opponents, critics and institutions is drawing concern from legal experts and scholars who say the rhetoric could weaken public trust in elections, science and government institutions.

Since beginning his second presidency, Trump has made a series of claims portraying critics as part of alleged conspiracies. The Guardian reports that these have included attacks over election security, climate change and artificial intelligence, with experts arguing that such claims can be used to justify restrictions or pressure against perceived opponents.

The debate has also extended to the media. Trump recently barred CNN, Politico and MS Now from White House access, prompting the three outlets to file a lawsuit challenging the decision on First Amendment and due-process grounds.

Harvard government professor Steven Levitsky said conspiracy theories have historically been used by authoritarian leaders to portray opponents as threats and provide justification for repression. Princeton historian Julian Zelizer similarly argued that Trump’s repeated conspiracy claims could undermine confidence in democratic institutions.

The administration, however, continues to defend its approach on issues including election security and government oversight, arguing that it is addressing threats and enforcing US laws.

The controversy comes as the United States approaches the 2026 midterm elections, putting renewed attention on political rhetoric, institutional independence, media access and public confidence in the electoral process.
