A governorship candidate of the Democratic Labour Alliance (DLA) has raised concerns over the worsening impact of flooding in parts of Rivers State, calling for urgent measures to protect communities and livelihoods.
The candidate said recurring floods have disrupted economic activities, damaged property and placed additional pressure on residents, particularly in vulnerable communities.
The concerns come as flooding remains a major challenge in several parts of Nigeria, where heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage systems, blocked waterways and development in flood-prone areas can increase the risk to communities.
The candidate urged relevant authorities to strengthen flood-control measures, improve drainage infrastructure and develop more effective early-warning and emergency-response systems.
The call also highlighted the need for long-term planning rather than relying solely on emergency responses after flooding occurs. Better maintenance of drainage channels, improved urban planning and protection of natural waterways could help reduce the effects of future floods.
Flooding remains a significant environmental and infrastructure challenge for Rivers State, with potential consequences for housing, transportation, agriculture and local businesses.
The candidate said addressing the problem should form part of a broader development strategy aimed at protecting communities while sustaining economic activity across the state.
