The Senate and House of Representatives have extended the implementation period of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
The extension, approved on Tuesday, gives Ministries, Departments and Agencies an additional three months to complete ongoing capital projects and utilise funds already appropriated under the 2025 budget.
At the Senate, the amendment was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who said the extension was necessary because the implementation of capital projects had not reached optimal levels despite the release of funds to government agencies.
The House of Representatives also approved the extension following consideration of a bill sponsored by its Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere. Lawmakers said the move would help prevent the abandonment of ongoing projects and allow government agencies to complete projects captured in the 2025 budget.
The latest decision marks the fourth extension of the 2025 capital budget. The implementation deadline was initially December 31, 2025, before being moved to March 31, June 30 and September 30, 2026.
The extension does not introduce new projects or provide a fresh appropriation. It simply gives agencies additional time to implement existing capital allocations under the 2025 budget framework.
The new deadline means eligible capital projects under the 2025 budget can now be implemented until December 31, 2026, subject to the required legislative and executive proceses
