Construction of the over $7 billion Gateway Deep Sea Port and Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area is expected to begin in November 2026, Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced.

Abiodun said the groundbreaking ceremony would take place in November, with construction commencing immediately afterwards. He added that the port is expected to be substantially completed within two and a half years.

The project is being developed in partnership with DP World following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the global ports and logistics operator in Paris on September 23.

The governor said the development would strengthen Ogun State’s maritime capacity, attract investment and support wider economic activity around Ogun Waterside. The project has been under consideration for more than three decades.

The port is also expected to benefit from complementary infrastructure, including the Ogun section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the rehabilitation of the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Ore Road, which are intended to improve connectivity to the area.

The development places Ogun’s maritime ambitions alongside its existing industrial base, with the state government seeking to expand trade, logistics and investment opportunities.
