Milei Heads to UN as Falklands Oil Dispute Raises Tensions

Argentine President Javier Milei is set to address the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday as tensions with Britain intensify over oil exploration around the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas.

Argentina has begun sanctions proceedings against more than 60 companies and individuals linked to an offshore oil drilling project around the islands. Britain has rejected the move, maintaining that the Falkland Islanders have the right to develop their natural resources.

The dispute has gained renewed international attention after US President Donald Trump, a close ally of Milei, suggested Washington could reconsider its traditionally neutral position on the Falklands issue. Britain has said it will defend the islands’ status and the right of their residents to self-determination.

Milei has argued that the oil project conflicts with a 1976 UN General Assembly resolution calling on Argentina and Britain to resolve their sovereignty dispute through dialogue and avoid unilateral actions.

Argentina and Britain fought a 10-week war over the islands in 1982 after Argentine forces invaded the archipelago. Britain retained control following Argentina’s surrender.

Milei has also submitted legislation seeking tougher sanctions against activities involving natural resources in areas claimed by Argentina.

The operators of the Sea Lion offshore project, Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration, have said they do not expect Argentina’s actions to stop development.
