Ophthalmic nurses in Lagos State have provided free eye screening and basic eye-care services to commercial drivers at the Idi-Araba Motor Park in Mushin as part of an outreach aimed at reducing preventable vision problems.
The exercise, organised by the Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Ophthalmic Nurses Association, included eye examinations, provision of reading glasses and referrals for drivers requiring further medical attention.
The outreach was held on September 17 following the association’s annual conference at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, which focused on innovations, safety and patient-centred care in ophthalmic nursing.
Chairman of the association’s Lagos chapter, Godwin Manema, said the programme was designed to bring essential eye-care services closer to commercial drivers and identify conditions requiring additional treatment.
Drivers found to need further examination were referred to the Idi-Araba Eye Centre and Guinness Eye Centre for continued care.
The organisers also stressed the importance of strengthening community-based eye care and ensuring that ophthalmic nurses can provide services within their professional training and scope.
The initiative highlights the link between good vision and road safety, particularly among commercial drivers who spend long hours on busy Lagos roads.
