Rooftop Solar Expansion Needs Stronger Cooperation Between Cities and Governments

The rapid expansion of rooftop solar power will depend on closer cooperation between local authorities and national governments, as cities seek to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more affordable energy.

Rooftop solar has become an increasingly important part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security. Falling technology costs and improvements in battery storage are making it easier for households and businesses to generate and store their own electricity.

However, the pace of adoption varies widely between cities and countries. Complex planning rules, grid connection delays, limited financing and differences in government policies can prevent solar projects from reaching their full potential.

Greater coordination between city administrations and national governments could help remove these barriers by aligning regulations, investment programmes and electricity-grid planning. Local authorities are also in a strong position to identify suitable buildings and neighbourhoods for solar deployment, while national governments can provide broader policy and financial support.

The push comes as governments face growing pressure to expand renewable energy while keeping electricity systems reliable and affordable.

For developing economies, wider rooftop solar adoption could also help reduce pressure on overstretched power grids and provide an alternative source of electricity for households and businesses.

The experience of cities pursuing solar expansion is therefore increasingly shaping broader national strategies for the clean-energy transition.
