The growing market for AI-powered wearable devices is facing mounting privacy concerns that could complicate technology companies’ efforts to establish smart glasses and other devices as the next major computing platform.

Devices capable of seeing, hearing and responding to their surroundings are attracting interest from major technology companies, but their ability to continuously collect information has raised concerns about recording people without their knowledge or consent.

Meta’s AI-equipped Ray-Ban smart glasses have become a major focus of the debate, with privacy lawsuits and restrictions on their use at some venues in the United Kingdom. Meta has defended its safeguards, including an indicator light that signals when the glasses are recording.

Other companies are exploring designs intended to address similar concerns. Samsung plans to enter the smart-glasses market through partnerships, while startups including Even Realities are developing camera-free glasses. Companies such as Pocket and Plaud are also designing recording devices that require users to deliberately activate recording.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has argued that future always-on AI devices should process information locally rather than continuously sending personal data to cloud servers, although he acknowledged that achieving this at scale could take time.

The debate highlights a central challenge for the emerging market: AI wearables become more useful when they have greater access to their surroundings, but that same capability can create privacy risks for both users and bystanders.

Technology companies are therefore under increasing pressure to provide clearer recording signals, stronger safeguards, local processing and greater user control as they seek to build consumer trust.
