Health workers at 77 primary healthcare centres across nine Local Government Areas in Kaduna State are helping to prevent maternal deaths by treating women who develop severe bleeding after childbirth.
The health workers, mainly community health extension workers, were trained to use the E-MOTIVE approach, a package designed to quickly detect and manage postpartum haemorrhage, one of the leading causes of maternal deaths.
At Mando Primary Healthcare Centre in Igabi Local Government Area, 28-year-old Hadiza Umar developed severe bleeding shortly after delivering her sixth child in April 2026. Health workers quickly applied the E-MOTIVE approach and successfully controlled the bleeding without referring her to a general hospital or requiring a blood transfusion.
Another mother, Aishatu Isah, received similar treatment at PHC Abdu Kwari in Sabon Gari Local Government Area after experiencing postpartum haemorrhage following childbirth.
According to Pathfinder International, 77 health workers across nine LGAs have been trained under the Task Shifting and Task Sharing project, with the programme reporting zero maternal deaths linked to postpartum haemorrhage in the participating facilities since August 2025.
The E-MOTIVE approach involves early measurement of blood loss, uterine massage, medicines such as oxytocin and tranexamic acid, intravenous fluids, monitoring, examination and escalation of care when necessary.
