Personal belongings of late French film star and animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot have fetched nearly €1 million at an auction in Paris, generating proceeds for animal welfare and her only son.
The auction, organised by Millon, featured 285 items collected from Bardot’s homes in Paris and Saint-Tropez. The collection included clothing, furniture, sunglasses, guitars, tableware, a typewriter and two dog collars. The sale raised almost 20 times the original combined estimate, with about 3,000 bidders registering from France and abroad.
Among the standout sales were two dog collars that sold for €9,400, despite being valued at only about €30. A self-portrait by Bardot fetched nearly €40,000, while one of her guitars sold for €8,600.
Bardot, who died in December aged 91, left acting in the 1970s and devoted much of her later life to animal protection. Her foundation said the auction continues the work she began when she established the organisation in 1986.
However, the sale has also triggered a dispute with Bardot’s widower, Bernard d’Ormale, who criticised the decision to auction personal belongings. The foundation said the sale had been approved while he was still its president.
