French far left leader Jean Luc Melenchon is emerging as the most likely challenger to far right politician Marine Le Pen in next year’s presidential runoff, according to a poll released on Monday, highlighting the growing political divide in France as President Emmanuel Macron prepares to leave office.
The survey found that Melenchon, leader of the left wing France Unbowed party, could reach the second round in at least three of the five election scenarios tested. He also tied for second place in another scenario.
However, the poll suggested that Le Pen would comfortably defeat Melenchon if they faced each other in a runoff, securing about 64% of the vote compared with 36% for the far left leader.
Melenchon was projected to receive between 16% and 17% in first round scenarios, while Le Pen’s support ranged from 35% to 38%.
The findings present a difficult picture for France’s centrist politicians, who are struggling to maintain support as voters increasingly turn toward parties on the political extremes.
Macron’s second and final term has left the political centre weakened, while economic difficulties and dissatisfaction with his presidency have created opportunities for both France Unbowed and Le Pen’s National Rally.
Centrist politician Edouard Philippe said on Monday that the possibility of Le Pen and Melenchon meeting in the second round was a serious and realistic prospect.
Melenchon has previously contested France’s presidency three times, in 2012, 2017 and 2022, but has never advanced beyond the first round.
