European Union countries remain divided over proposed changes to sanctions against Russia as world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
EU ambassadors are discussing the bloc’s latest sanctions list, with measures targeting nearly 3,000 individuals and entities accused of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine due to expire unless an agreement is reached. Some member states are seeking changes that could remove sanctions on prominent Russian businessmen, while other governments oppose easing pressure on Moscow.
The dispute comes as Ukraine remains a major focus of diplomatic discussions at the UN. US President Donald Trump is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York, with the war and possible efforts to reduce attacks on energy infrastructure among the issues under discussion.
Trump is also scheduled to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen to sign a new agreement concerning Arctic security. Denmark and Greenland have said the arrangement will respect Greenland’s sovereignty while allowing an expanded US military presence.
The meetings highlight the range of geopolitical issues confronting Western governments, from the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia to growing strategic competition in the Arctic.
