The discussions, mediated by Qatar, involved Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. US President Donald Trump described the meeting as “very productive” and indicated that further discussions could take place soon.
Iranian officials, however, said the meeting was intended to communicate Tehran’s existing demands rather than signal a major change in its negotiating position. Those conditions include an end to the war, the cessation of US military actions and the naval blockade, and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
The talks have nevertheless raised expectations of possible diplomatic movement, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. Iran has indicated that the waterway could be reopened within seven days if its conditions are met.
Oil markets responded to the renewed diplomatic contacts, with Brent crude falling below $100 a barrel amid expectations that additional Middle Eastern supplies could return to the market.
Despite the discussions, significant differences remain between Washington and Tehran, leaving the next stage of negotiations uncertain.
