The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained why some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are opposed to his proposed Rainbow Coalition. According to Wike, the governors fear that the coalition could weaken their influence over the leadership of the National Assembly after the 2027 elections.
He alleged that governors such as Hope Uzodimma of Imo, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun are leading the opposition to the coalition for selfish reasons. Wike maintained that the Rainbow Coalition is designed to mobilize multi-party support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, not to undermine APC’s strength.
Wike argued that politicians can support Tinubu for president while contesting governorship or legislative seats under different party platforms, citing the example of the G5 governors in 2023. He insisted that the coalition provides inclusivity for politicians outside APC who still want to back Tinubu’s presidency.
Observers note that the disagreement highlights internal divisions within APC ahead of the 2027 elections, with concerns that the coalition could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
