The Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, has joined Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The delegation is led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is representing President Bola Tinubu at the high-level session that opened on September 8, 2026.
The theme for this year’s assembly is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” Nigeria’s participation underscores its commitment to peace, security, economic growth, and international cooperation.
Governor Idris is expected to use the platform to strengthen Kebbi State’s global partnerships, attract investment, and engage with development partners. He will also take part in discussions around the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework (2026–2030), as well as the Sustainable Development Goals Roundtable and the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting.
Other governors in attendance include AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, and Babagana Zulum of Borno. Nigeria’s national statement will be delivered by Vice President Shettima during the General Debate on September 24, where he will outline the country’s priorities on economic diplomacy, climate action, and reforms in the global financial system.
The inclusion of state governors highlights Nigeria’s effort to decentralize international engagement, ensuring that states benefit directly from global partnerships. With Nigeria facing economic and security challenges, the delegation aims to strengthen ties with international partners and push for reforms that will support national and regional development.
