CNN, MS NOW and Politico have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his administration after their journalists were barred from accessing the White House.
The three news organisations said the administration revoked their journalists’ credentials without notice or due process after Trump criticised their coverage. They argue that the ban violates their First Amendment rights and prevents them from independently reporting on the US government.
The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks the restoration of their White House access and an order preventing further restrictions. The organisations said the government should not determine what the press can report or publish.
Trump has defended the decision, accusing the outlets of publishing what he describes as “fake news” and calling their reporting a national security threat. The White House Correspondents’ Association has called for the journalists’ access to be restored.
