A Nigerian-based social enterprise has unveiled a new initiative to combat period poverty, introducing affordable and reusable sanitary pads aimed at supporting women and girls who struggle to access menstrual products.

The firm explained that the project is designed to provide sustainable solutions to menstrual hygiene challenges, particularly in rural and low-income communities where access to disposable pads is limited. By offering reusable alternatives, the initiative seeks to reduce costs, promote environmental sustainability, and ensure that no girl misses school due to menstruation.

Community leaders and health advocates have welcomed the move, stressing that period poverty remains a major barrier to education and empowerment. Many girls are forced to use unsafe materials during their periods, leading to health risks and stigma. The reusable pads, they argue, could restore dignity and improve attendance in schools.

The company also announced plans to partner with NGOs and government agencies to distribute the pads widely and conduct sensitization campaigns on menstrual hygiene. Training sessions will be organized to teach proper use and maintenance of the products, ensuring long-term benefits.

Analysts note that the initiative reflects a growing push across Africa to address menstrual health as a public policy issue. Tackling period poverty, they argue, is not just about hygiene but also about gender equality, education, and social justice.
