American college football made a colourful return to Britain as Wembley Stadium hosted the inaugural Union Jack Classic, bringing together Arizona State and Kansas in a landmark event aimed at taking the sport to a wider international audience.

The September 19 game marked the first top-tier US college football fixture to be played on British soil, nearly four decades after Richmond defeated Boston University at Crystal Palace in 1988. The occasion was built around far more than the game itself, with marching bands, cheerleaders, music, fireworks and large groups of supporters creating an atmosphere more closely associated with American college campuses.

Around 46,500 spectators attended the event, below the 60,000 figure organisers had hoped to attract. Nevertheless, the event showcased the distinctive culture surrounding college football, with fans participating in chants, tailgate-style activities and performances throughout the day.

On the field, Arizona State defeated Kansas 24-17 after turning the game around during a decisive spell around half-time. Jaren Hamilton produced a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, while Arizona State also capitalised on a Kansas fumble to establish a commanding advantage.

The significance of the occasion extended beyond the result. Many of the young players had never previously travelled outside the United States, making the Wembley appearance a major personal experience as well as an opportunity to promote their universities internationally.

Organisers and Big 12 officials see London as part of a broader effort to expand the conference’s international presence. The Union Jack Classic has a multi-year agreement with Wembley, with organisers already looking toward future editions involving different teams.

The event therefore represented an important experiment in exporting the traditions, entertainment and commercial appeal of American college football beyond its traditional home.
