Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran backed Houthis exchanged fresh attacks Thursday as fighting pushed more civilians to flee across the Red Sea, raising further concerns about global oil supplies.
Houthi media reported Saudi airstrikes in Hajjah province and near Taiz, while Saudi authorities said a Yemeni man was killed by debris from an intercepted Houthi drone near Taif. More than 80 people have reportedly been wounded in previous attacks.
The conflict has also disrupted shipping. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said a Togo flagged oil tanker caught fire after being hit while attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media.
More than 100,000 Yemenis have been displaced by the latest fighting, according to the International Organization for Migration. Some civilians have crossed the Bab el Mandeb Strait by boat to reach Djibouti.
The escalation threatens two major energy routes, the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz, at a time when oil prices remain above $100 a barrel. US President Donald Trump has also said he faces a major decision over whether to launch further attacks on Iran.
