The National Assembly has transmitted the 2026 Constitution Amendment Bill to the Houses of Assembly of the 36 states for consideration and approval.
The move marks another stage in the ongoing process to amend the 1999 Constitution and allows state lawmakers to examine the proposed changes and communicate their positions to the National Assembly.
The transmission of the bill follows deliberations by both chambers of the National Assembly on the proposed amendments, which cover various aspects of Nigeria’s political and administrative system.
The proposals include issues relating to governance, electoral reforms, the judiciary, security, local government administration, fiscal matters and the distribution of powers among the different levels of government.
Under the constitutional amendment process, the support of at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly is required for the relevant proposals to proceed to the next stage.
The state legislatures are therefore expected to consider the provisions of the bill and forward their resolutions to the National Assembly after completing their deliberations.
The outcome of the state-level consideration will determine the next steps in the constitutional amendment process.
