Britain to Appoint Ambassador to Venezuela in Diplomatic Upgrade

Britain will strengthen its diplomatic relations with Venezuela by appointing an ambassador to the country, the UK government said on Tuesday.

The move is intended to improve Britain’s ability to support efforts toward a democratic transition in Venezuela, according to a written statement presented to parliament.

The government described the decision as part of a broader international reengagement with Venezuela.

However, it stressed that the policy did not change Britain’s assessment of Venezuela’s recent electoral processes, including the 2024 election, and did not amount to support for any political party.

The UK said its longstanding position was to recognise states rather than governments.
