Bad Roads, Water Scarcity Cripple Lafia Tomato Market as Traders Decry Low Patronage

Tomato traders at a major tomato market in Lafia, Nasarawa State, are counting their losses as poor road conditions, inadequate water supply and declining patronage continue to hamper business activities at the market.

The traders said the challenges had made it difficult for customers, farmers and other buyers to access the market, while the shortage of water was creating additional difficulties for those involved in the handling and sale of fresh produce.

According to the traders, the condition of the roads leading to the market has discouraged some customers and increased the difficulty of transporting tomatoes and other agricultural produce to and from the facility.

They said the situation was particularly concerning because tomatoes are highly perishable and require efficient transportation and proper handling to minimise losses.

Poor access affects business

The traders lamented that poor road infrastructure had become a major obstacle to their daily activities, with vehicles finding it difficult to move smoothly around the market and adjoining routes.

They said the situation could discourage bulk buyers and reduce the number of customers visiting the market.

For traders dealing in perishable agricultural commodities, delays in transportation can also increase the risk of spoilage, potentially resulting in financial losses.

The traders therefore called on the relevant authorities to rehabilitate the roads serving the market and improve access to the trading area.

Water shortage compounds traders’ problems

Beyond the roads, the traders identified inadequate water supply as another major challenge confronting the market.

They said reliable access to water was important for maintaining basic hygiene, cleaning and other activities associated with the handling of food products.

The shortage, they noted, had made operations more difficult and raised concerns about maintaining appropriate sanitary conditions within the market.

The traders appealed for the provision of a dependable water supply system as part of efforts to improve conditions for both traders and customers.

Low patronage raises concerns

The infrastructure problems have also been linked by traders to what they described as low patronage.

They said fewer customers could translate into slower turnover, particularly for traders handling tomatoes that cannot remain fresh indefinitely.

The traders urged government agencies and other stakeholders to address the challenges affecting the market before they further undermine the livelihoods of people whose businesses depend on the daily movement of agricultural produce.

Market infrastructure needs attention

The concerns raised by the traders highlight the importance of market infrastructure to Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.

Tomatoes move through several stages from farms to markets and eventually to consumers. Poor roads, inadequate market facilities and weak basic services can increase the cost and difficulty of moving the commodity through that chain.

Improving roads and water infrastructure around the Lafia market would therefore benefit not only traders but also farmers, transporters, wholesalers, retailers and consumers.

The traders called for urgent intervention to improve the market environment, restore better access and provide basic facilities capable of supporting a more efficient agricultural trading system.

For the traders, the appeal is straightforward: better roads, reliable water and improved market infrastructure could help restore customer confidence and create a more conducive environment for tomato businesses to thrive.
