A coordinated intelligence-led operation involving operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Katsina State Community Vigilantes, and specially trained local hunters has resulted in the death of notorious bandit kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki and more than 60 suspected bandits during a major security offensive in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Security sources disclosed that the operation was launched after intelligence indicated that over 200 heavily armed bandits, led by Aiki and supported by members of another criminal network from neighbouring Zamfara State, were planning coordinated attacks on communities in the area. The security team intercepted the group, leading to a fierce gun battle that left dozens of the attackers dead, including their leader.
Idi Abasu Aiki was reportedly linked to several deadly attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes across Katsina and Zamfara states. His death is being regarded as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in Nigeria’s North-West.
The operation, however, came at a cost, as four members of the Katsina State Community Vigilantes and the local hunters lost their lives during the confrontation. Security agencies paid tribute to the fallen operatives, describing them as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of their communities.
Authorities have since intensified security operations across the affected areas, with follow-up raids and surveillance aimed at tracking down fleeing members of the criminal gang and preventing further attacks. Residents have also been urged to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence to sustain the fight against banditry in the region.
