Amazon is set to raise about $5.8 billion (£4.25 billion) through its first-ever sterling-denominated bond sale, marking the technology giant’s latest move to expand its access to international debt markets.

The offering is structured across four maturities — three, six, 12 and 19 years — and has attracted strong demand from investors. The order book reportedly exceeded £12 billion, allowing Amazon to increase the size of the deal.

The bond sale comes as major technology companies ramp up spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centres and other technology investments. The enormous capital requirements associated with the AI race have pushed several major technology firms to increasingly rely on debt markets to fund expansion.

For Amazon, the sterling offering also broadens its international financing base. The company has previously accessed markets through bonds denominated in currencies including the euro, Swiss franc and Canadian dollar.

The deal underscores the growing scale of investment required to support the next phase of AI and cloud computing, while highlighting the continued appetite among global investors for debt issued by major technology companies.
