The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast three days of cloudy skies, thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Wednesday, September 9, to Friday, September 11, 2026, urging residents to take necessary precautions as the weather system develops.
The agency disclosed this in its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, warning that different parts of the country would experience varying degrees of thunderstorms and rainfall during the three-day period.
Thunderstorms expected across northern states
For Wednesday, NiMet forecast patches of cloud over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Taraba and Kebbi states.
The agency said isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall were expected later in the day over parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.
The forecast indicates that residents in these areas may experience sudden changes in weather conditions, particularly during periods of thunderstorm activity.
North-Central states to receive rainfall
In the North-Central region, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory.
It further forecast thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over most parts of the region during the afternoon and evening hours.
The forecast places the FCT among the areas expected to experience thunderstorm activity during the period, making weather awareness particularly important for commuters and residents engaged in outdoor activities.
Southern states face cloudy skies and rainfall
Across the southern region, NiMet forecast a generally cloudy atmosphere, with chances of morning rainfall over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states.
Moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of the southern region later in the day.
Flood risk highlighted
NiMet also raised concerns about the possibility of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the forecast period.
The warning comes amid continuing rainfall across parts of the country, with the agency urging areas facing possible flash floods to activate appropriate emergency response measures.
NiMet issues safety advice
The weather agency warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in some locations and advised members of the public to secure loose objects that could be blown away or cause damage.
Residents were also advised to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances from power sources during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches.
NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports and urged the public to remain updated through its official weather information channels.
The latest forecast underscores the need for residents, motorists, farmers, businesses and emergency agencies to remain alert as the country enters another period of widespread thunderstorm and rainfall activity.
