Taiwan is increasingly using its semiconductor dominance as a tool of diplomacy as global demand for artificial intelligence chips intensifies.
At SEMICON Taiwan, officials highlighted the island’s role as a reliable technology partner and signalled a willingness to share the economic benefits of its semiconductor expertise with like-minded countries. Taiwan is home to TSMC, whose advanced chips are critical to the global AI industry.
The strategy comes as Taiwan faces growing pressure from the United States to expand chip manufacturing overseas. Taiwanese companies have announced an additional $20 billion in planned U.S. investments, while TSMC’s total planned investment in Arizona has reached about $265 billion.
Taipei is also strengthening semiconductor ties with Europe, positioning its chip industry as an important pillar of economic security and cooperation among democratic partners.
For Taiwan, the challenge is to expand its global footprint without weakening the domestic semiconductor ecosystem that has become one of its most valuable strategic assets. The result is a new form of “chip diplomacy”, where advanced technology is increasingly intertwined with trade, security and international influence.
