Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is hopeful of recovering in time to feature for Galatasaray in their UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon next week after suffering a groin injury during Friday’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Başakşehir.
Osimhen was forced off in the 33rd minute after experiencing discomfort, raising concerns over his availability for Galatasaray’s crucial European fixture.
However, the Nigerian forward has played down fears surrounding the injury and remains optimistic about returning to action if Galatasaray’s medical and coaching staff give him the green light.
“I have nothing, I didn’t want to risk myself. If our coach deems it appropriate for the Sporting Lisbon match, I want to be on the field,” Osimhen said.
The striker had made an immediate impact before being substituted, putting Galatasaray ahead with an excellent finish into the top corner after being set up by Lucas Torreira.
Barış Alper Yılmaz replaced Osimhen following the injury, with Galatasaray eventually holding on to secure a hard-fought victory.
The Turkish champions later confirmed that Osimhen had suffered strain and pain in his right adductor muscle group and that treatment had already commenced.
The club also revealed that Osimhen and teammate Mario Lemina were undergoing further medical examinations, including MRI scans, with the results expected to provide a clearer picture of the severity of their respective injuries.
The development has created uncertainty over Osimhen’s participation in the Champions League, but his determination to face Sporting Lisbon will offer encouragement to Galatasaray supporters.
The Nigerian has become a key attacking figure for the Turkish champions, and his presence would provide a major boost as Galatasaray prepare for another demanding European assignment.
His fitness will also be closely monitored by Nigeria, with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle expected to consider Osimhen for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
For now, Osimhen’s immediate priority is recovery, with the striker hoping his latest injury setback will prove to be only a minor scare rather than a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
A successful return against Sporting Lisbon would not only strengthen Galatasaray’s attacking options but also provide relief for Nigeria ahead of their upcoming international commitments.
