The Yobe State Government has handed over four major agro industrial assets to the Nigeria Food Corporation as part of efforts to revive agricultural production, strengthen food security and expand economic opportunities in the state.
The handover is expected to facilitate the rehabilitation and utilisation of the facilities while creating a stronger platform for commercial agriculture and agro processing across Yobe.
The development is part of broader efforts by the state government to reposition its agricultural sector and ensure that existing public investments in agro industrial infrastructure are put to productive use.
The four assets are expected to support different stages of the agricultural value chain, including production, processing and storage. Their revival could help reduce post harvest losses, improve farmers’ access to markets and create additional opportunities for value addition.
The state government said the partnership with the Nigeria Food Corporation would help unlock the economic potential of the facilities and strengthen the connection between farmers and industrial processors.
Yobe has considerable agricultural potential, with farming remaining an important source of livelihoods for residents. Crops produced in the state include grains and other food commodities that can provide raw materials for agro processing industries.
However, inadequate processing facilities, storage limitations and weak market linkages have continued to constrain agricultural productivity and reduce the income farmers derive from their produce.
The handover is therefore expected to support efforts to address some of these challenges by providing infrastructure capable of supporting commercial scale agricultural activities.
The Nigeria Food Corporation is expected to play a significant role in the management and development of the facilities, with the aim of increasing agricultural output and strengthening food supply chains.
The partnership also aligns with the Federal Government’s broader efforts to promote food security through increased domestic production, improved processing capacity and greater private and public sector investment in agriculture.
Stakeholders have consistently identified agro industrialisation as an important pathway for reducing food losses, creating employment and improving the competitiveness of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
For Yobe, the successful utilisation of the four assets could provide opportunities for farmers, processors, transporters, traders and other participants in the agricultural value chain.
It could also stimulate economic activities in communities surrounding the facilities and encourage additional investment in agriculture.
The initiative comes at a time when food prices remain a major concern for Nigerian households, making increased domestic food production and efficient agricultural value chains critical to improving food availability and affordability.
The state government is expected to continue collaborating with relevant federal agencies and private sector investors to maximise the benefits of the assets and expand agricultural opportunities across Yobe.
The handover represents another step towards transforming agriculture from predominantly subsistence activity into a more commercially oriented sector capable of generating jobs, supporting industries and contributing significantly to the state’s economic development.
If effectively managed and adequately funded, the four agro industrial assets could become important centres for agricultural processing and help Yobe strengthen its contribution to Nigeria’s food production and economic diversification efforts.
