The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has commended the National Examinations Council (NECO) for its rapid adoption of technology, particularly the transition to Computer Based Examinations (CBE), saying the reforms have strengthened the council’s capacity to conduct credible examinations.
According to the minister, NECO has recorded significant improvements under the leadership of its Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, with technology now playing a greater role in examination administration and security.
Alausa spoke during a meeting with the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and other education stakeholders, where he described NECO’s digital transformation as remarkable.
He said the council had become better positioned to conduct credible examinations, noting its speed in adopting computer based testing and other technological innovations.
The minister also defended the continued leadership of Wushishi, saying the decision was based on performance and measurable results rather than patronage.
Alausa said NECO’s technological reforms were particularly important in the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle examination malpractice, describing examination leaks and cheating as serious threats to the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.
He recalled that examination questions were previously allegedly obtained for as little as N3,000, warning that such practices could undermine students who genuinely prepare for examinations.
According to him, widespread malpractice could create a situation where hardworking students are disadvantaged and eventually encouraged to engage in cheating.
The minister therefore urged parents, teachers, school proprietors, principals, invigilators and students to support ongoing efforts to restore integrity to public examinations.
NECO’s digital reforms include online registration, biometric verification, computer based testing for selected examinations, digital certificates and automated grading.
The Federal Government is gradually expanding the use of Computer Based Examinations as part of efforts to improve efficiency, strengthen examination security and reduce malpractice.
The examination body has also expanded its international reach, conducting examinations in several countries and providing Nigerian curriculum based examinations for schools and candidates outside the country.
