A fresh legal dispute has emerged over the succession to the Awujale throne of Ijebuland, with members of a ruling house dragging the Ogun State Government and other relatives to court.
The suit is connected to the ongoing process of selecting a successor to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. The succession process has generated disagreements among members of the royal families and other stakeholders over the procedure for choosing the next monarch.
The development comes amid continued efforts by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to conduct its selection process. The Ogun State Government had earlier cleared the ruling house to resume the process.
The legal action is expected to further complicate the succession process as the parties seek judicial interpretation of issues surrounding the selection and emergence of the next Awujale.
The dispute has attracted considerable attention in Ijebuland because of the cultural and traditional importance of the Awujale stool, which remains one of the most prominent traditional institutions in Ogun State.
