The United States military has stepped up training for Nigerian troops as part of efforts to strengthen security cooperation and improve the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The training is being conducted at the US military operating location in Bauchi State and covers a range of specialised areas, including unmanned aircraft systems, combat casualty care, weapons familiarisation, camouflage, water treatment, explosive ordnance disposal and small-unit tactics.

According to the US Army, the training is designed to improve shared readiness, military capability and long-term partner capacity between the two countries. Nigerian personnel are receiving both classroom instruction and practical, hands-on training, particularly in the use of unmanned aerial systems.

The latest training builds on a broader security partnership between Nigeria and the United States. In February, the Defence Headquarters confirmed the arrival of about 100 US military personnel and associated equipment at Bauchi following a formal request by the Federal Government for military training, technical support and intelligence sharing.

The US personnel are serving in advisory and training capacities rather than as combat forces. Nigerian authorities have said the cooperation is aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to counter terrorist threats and protect vulnerable communities.

The expanded training is expected to provide Nigerian troops with additional technical skills and operational knowledge that could support ongoing counterterrorism efforts and improve cooperation between the two militaries.
