The European Union has brought ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox under its strictest digital-platform regulations after the services met the threshold for classification as “Very Large Online Platforms” under the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
The designation means the platforms will face additional obligations aimed at addressing systemic risks associated with their size and influence across the European digital market.
Under the rules, the companies will be required to conduct comprehensive assessments of potential risks linked to illegal content, user safety, fundamental rights, public security and electoral processes. They will also face greater transparency and accountability requirements.
The platforms will have four months to comply with the additional obligations.
For ChatGPT, the designation represents a significant development in the EU’s oversight of artificial intelligence services. Regulators are expected to pay particular attention to risks associated with AI-generated content, misinformation, user safety and the broader impact of AI systems on society.
Reddit and Roblox, which rely heavily on user-generated content and online interactions, will also face increased scrutiny over content moderation, child protection and other potential risks affecting users.
The European Commission’s decision reflects the EU’s broader effort to hold the largest digital services accountable for the risks created by their scale, while strengthening protections for users across the bloc.
The move further reinforces Europe’s position as one of the world’s most active regulators of major technology and AI platforms.
