White House Health Adviser Selected as Next FDA Commissioner

U.S. President Donald Trump has selected Dr. Heidi Overton, a White House health policy adviser, to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), pending Senate confirmation.

Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and has played a key role in shaping the Trump administration’s healthcare agenda. She holds a medical degree from the University of New Mexico and received additional training at Johns Hopkins.

If confirmed, Overton will take charge of an FDA facing major challenges, including significant staff losses, leadership turnover and concerns over the agency’s regulatory direction. She would succeed Marty Makary, who resigned earlier this year.

Her nomination is expected to draw scrutiny from lawmakers and public-health groups because of her positions on vaccines, abortion policy and other healthcare issues. The Senate confirmation process will determine whether she formally becomes the agency’s next commissioner.
