Crude oil prices extended their recent gains on Tuesday as uncertainty surrounding efforts to resolve tensions between the United States and Iran continued to weigh on global financial markets.

Brent crude rose above $91 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude gained to about $85 per barrel after both benchmark contracts advanced by more than two per cent in the previous session.

The latest movement in oil prices reflects growing concerns that the prolonged Middle East crisis could continue to disrupt energy supplies and keep crude prices elevated for an extended period.

Market sentiment has been particularly affected by uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Investors remain concerned that prolonged tensions could threaten the movement of crude and other commodities through the region.

The uncertainty has also weighed on equities, with several major Asian markets recording losses during Tuesday’s trading session.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 2.5 per cent, while stocks in Seoul and Taipei declined by more than one per cent. Markets in Sydney, Singapore and Mumbai also recorded losses.

However, the decline was not universal. Hong Kong, Shanghai, Manila, Wellington and Jakarta recorded gains during the session.

The divergent performance reflected the cautious mood among investors as they assessed the economic consequences of elevated oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and changing expectations for global interest rates.

Higher crude prices could create additional inflationary pressure if they persist, particularly by increasing transportation, manufacturing and energy costs.

Investors are also watching developments in the United States, where softer economic data have reduced concerns about an immediate increase in interest rates. However, persistent energy price pressures could complicate efforts to bring inflation under control.

Long term US Treasury yields have also risen significantly, adding another source of pressure to equity markets as investors reassess the outlook for borrowing costs and economic growth.

The uncertainty surrounding negotiations between Washington and Tehran remains a major factor driving market sentiment.

Efforts to reach an agreement over the conflict and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have yet to produce a clear breakthrough, leaving investors concerned that the disruption could persist.

For global markets, a prolonged period of elevated crude prices could have broader consequences, particularly for economies that rely heavily on imported energy.

Higher oil prices could increase government and corporate costs while putting additional pressure on consumers and businesses already dealing with elevated prices.

For oil producing countries, however, sustained crude prices above $90 could provide stronger export revenues and improve government earnings, depending on production levels and fiscal arrangements.

Nigeria, as a major oil producing country, could potentially benefit from stronger international crude prices through higher export earnings. However, the impact would also depend on domestic oil production, production costs, crude differentials and the country’s ability to translate higher prices into increased government revenue.

The latest market movements therefore underline the continuing influence of geopolitical developments on global commodities and financial markets.

Investors are expected to closely monitor diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, developments around the Strait of Hormuz, crude supply conditions and further economic data from major economies.

Until there is greater clarity on the geopolitical situation, market volatility is likely to remain elevated, with oil prices and global equities particularly sensitive to new developments.
